Fancy Switch Plates |

Switch plate covers can be kind of boring unless you are willing to spend $15 to $30 for fancy ones. Or, you could make them fancy yourself. You can easily spray paint switch plates and the switches, I have even brush painted them with the wall paint if I wanted them to disappear like I did in the home theater room. Today I decided to cover the switch plates in my kitchen with fabric. This is very easy to do. Quick and easy enough that you can have different plates for different seasons of the year. My kitchen has a chicken theme so I chose a fabric with chickens on it. These also make wonderful gifts or a great craft project with kids. You will need:
- Scraps of fabric that match the room (or season) you are doing
- Mod podge (found at crafts stores)
- Small paint brush
- Newspaper
- Plastic bag
- Switch plate
Mod podge is basically glue and can be messy. I always put a plastic bag over the container so it does not get on the threads, it's hard to clean off and even harder to open it later if you don't get it all cleaned off.
Follow the directions under the photos.
I usually put on two coats of Mod podge, it dries pretty fast but you can also use a hair dryer to speed up the process. Be sure to prop it up on something while it's drying or it will stick to the newspaper you are working on. You can take this a step further by painting the screw heads and switches to match. I don't usually because I change them often and I never know what the next color will be. Unless it really clashes I just leave them white.
