My windows were supposed to be standard. Between the framing and the drywall they ended up being ½” wider than the standard measurements for blinds. That means that if I need to have the custom cut it at least doubles the price. Since the windows have a ½” frame around them I cut ¼” squares of scrap wood to fit the inside of each blind hanger and predrilled matching holes in them. That way, I can install the blinds to fit center in the window, the ½” frame allows for privacy and I am able to use the less expensive blinds. Now, once I put the drapes up you will never know that I had to shim them up.

Re: Hanging Blinds
I did the same thing for my roller shade. Roller shades can be custom cut but I gave the wrong measurement (oops) so it was too small and I had to shim it. Thanks for the tip.
