Do you know where your water shut off valves are? |

Do your kids know? What about visitors? What if you were not at your house but friends were or relatives? Would they know where to shut off your water in case of a break in the line?
We had the hose pop off our waterfiler that is connected to the ice maker for our fridge. Of course it popped off over night so we awoke at 4am to a huge flood on the first and second floors. We don't know how long it was running but there were gallons and gallons of water pouring through the light fixtures on the first floor. The water was completely under my brand new bamboo floor and the cabinets were full of water.
We fumbled around turning off the valves under the sink. We had forgotten the valve that was behind mountains of pots and pans on the waterfilter.
When water is shooting out of your cabinets you aren't thinking very clearly.
Do you know that even if you do get it shut off, and if you have a pressure tank, that has to empty before the water completely shuts off? If you were in my house would you know where the main valve is? I didn't even know where it was.
There turned out to be two and one of them was behind our water heater.
Is there so much crap under your sinks that you would have a hard time getting to them? Would you know that my washer shut off valves were behind some shelving?
We were able to use our shop vacs to suck up the water, they are great for water cleanup. Thank goodness I don't have carpet. We were lucky and didn't sustain any major damage, the floor survived and everything got dried out nicely.
Learn from us, look around to see where your valves are. Can you even get to them? Mark them and make sure the entire family knows where they are. Make signs to post over the valves and on the inside doors so if you are looking it is clear where they are.
The bright side? You know there has to be one. Well, the floors got a good cleaning and I needed to organize those cabinets anyway.
