Measuring Vinyl

Janeybug by Janeybug Journeyman(June 2007) (rank 1st)

If you have a strange shapped room or lots of corners it's hard to measure and mark your vinyl so it fits perfectly.  Even if your room is square you will probably find out that it is not perfectly square.

I used contractors masking paper to make a templet.  It's not very expensive.  You can buy it in the paint department in different widths.  Roll it out on your floor and tape the seams together.  This makes a perfect pattern that you can transfer to your vinyl with a marker so you can cut it out.  Works everytime.

No need to waste the paper once you have finished with it.  Use as a drop cloth or cut it into strips to mask off windows or doors when you paint.

Re: Measuring Vinyl

Good advice Janeybug!

The paper she is talking about is commonly referred to as Rosin paper (ross - in).

It is a heavy weight paper and is usually red in color.  It is an excellent way to measure and template your vinyl project and if I can add one bit of advice remember to allow yourself a gap around the room when you template it.  You do not have to have it water tight to the walls because you will have some form of base covering the gap so if you were to allow 1/4" you will be just fine.

Happy Refurbing!
