Painting a fireplace surround

mdhaworth by mdhaworth Journeyman(June 2007) (rank 3rd)
I think the best six bucks I've spent on this house was for a can of BBQ paint.

The fireplace insert/surround (not sure what to call it--see photo) that came with our house was a cheap looking brass color with lots of spots and discoloration and a broken door. Since the fireplace is the focal point for the living room I was all set to go invest in a whole new one but, given the other pressing projects I thought I'd try painting it first.

The entire surround was easy to remove from the hearth with a screwdriver. I took it outside, took off the doors and "curtains" and cleaned it. Two coats of matte black BBQ paint from a spray can and it looked 100% better. I then carefully masked off the glass and wood handles on the doors and sprayed the doors.  That was it.  I was able to reassemble it that evening and two years later it still looks fine (although the door is still broken). It's amazing what these new high heat paints for metal surfaces can do.

If you have a serviceable but ugly fireplace surround this is an easy, inexpensive solution

Re: Painting a fireplace surround
My fireplace cover has fake shiny gold handles that I find to be insanely tacky.  Can paints such as these cover them?  Does the paint leave any streaks?
