What to do with Scrap and Garbage

Janeybug by Janeybug Journeyman(June 2007) (rank 1st)

When undertaking a big project like building a house, remodeling a house or even adding a room you need to consider what you will do with your scrap and garbage.  It seems like a simple thing but believe me, it can get out of hand very quickly.

This is something that we didn't even think about until it was too late and it was out of control.  It was made worse by our drywallers who threw the drywall scrap out the windows.  They were supposed to cart it off but we fired them before that happened and they just left it.

If you have a big project, look into renting a container.  We just rented one and the price was really reasonable.  It was $115 for them to deliver it and pick it up, $3 per day rent and then whatever the ton rate is at the local dump.

Even for a small project, have a schedule and work on collecting all the scrap and garbage every day so it does not build up on you.  You might want to buy a few extra garbage cans and watch the sales on contractor garbage bags and have them on hand.

If your project is a family affair you might put someone in charge of it to make sure it gets done.

We have had a few "garbage" weekends where we get together and gather up the scrap and garbage and haul it off, I think with one more we should have it all carted off the property.  Learn from our mistake and address it before it is a problem.

Great idea. Yeah, pick up all the unnecessary item's etc and put them in the bin, and there's more room for you to walk around and not so much mess, and you know what 's rubbish and what's not. Excellent idea.

I often forget to budget in the cost of dump runs.  At $20 a truck load disposing of scrap starts to add up over the course of a project.
