Deck Roof

Janeybug by Janeybug Journeyman(June 2007) (rank 3rd)

There are a few of options out there when putting a roof on your deck.  Depending on where you live it can make your deck much more usable in all types of weather.   We get a lot of rain here so if you want to use your deck you need a cover on it.

We wanted something a little more substantial than the corrugated panels you can get at the hardware store so we found this company called CrystalLite.

http://www.crystaliteinc.com/

This is a system of panels and channeled track.  The panels were opaque and about ½” thick and fit they into channeled tracks that are installed on top of your structure.

While it was a lot more complicated than we thought, it is definitely a DIY project.  The company is very helpful with installation information.

Each beam has two tracks that get this really sticky tape.  You have no second chances with this tape so you have to be careful as you lay it down.

Once the track goes up another on goes on top and then the sheeting can go up. Once the panel is inserted into the track you pull off the top layer of the tape and that secures it to the track.  Then you put a cap on top of the track.

The first panel was really hard to get wedged into the channels of the track but that was the learning curve, the rest of the panels slid in pretty easily.

You can’t put weight on the panels so we used cross boards to support our weight while we installed the caps.

Once you have all the panels installed and the caps in place there is an edging that goes all the way around and gives it a nice finished look.

The project took two people, basic tools and two full days to complete.  It costs about $10 a square foot.
