Attention to Detail

Janeybug by Janeybug Journeyman(August 2007) (rank 1st)

When building your own home you can do everything standard or you can go outside the box and add little details along the way to make it your own.

There were two books that we drew inspiration from:   “Adding Character with Architectural Details”, a Better Homes and Garden book and Trading Spaces book called “Make it Yours”.

The things you do, do not have to be expensive or grand, it’s the little things that make it your own.

One of the things we did was on our trim.  Instead of just putting a board straight across the top we cut the ends at an angle.  We also used little carved pieces of wood at the trim joints and corners instead of mitering them.  Pretty simple really and it has a nice custom look.

There are all sorts of cool finials for stair and fence posts in the hardware stores these days and they are also easy to make yourself.

In our home theater we hired a company called   “Stellar vision” to paint stars on the ceiling using fluorescent paint.  http://www.stellarvision.com/   We first saw them at the Seattle Home show.  The prices vary with the size of the room but if you have a home show try to set it up from there as there is a pretty good show special.  Ours ended up being about  $500 and the effect is awesome.  They come to your house and do the whole thing in about 3 hours. They won't let you in the room to see their special process. I imagine it has something to do with projecting the stars on the ceiling.  You can pick a specific date, like the day you were born or your wedding day.

We wanted a winter sky with Orion centered in the room so we picked early in February.  We also have the Milky Way running through the center. They also put a few comets in just for fun. You can spot some of the major constellations and the effect is really good. In fact it has a great 3-D effect and you lose all feeling of being in a rectangular room.  It’s awesome in the theater room but would be great in a bedroom too.

I know it gets pretty hectic when you are building or remodeling but take a little time to see where you can do something a little special to really show your personality in your home.

Re: Attention to Detail

VERY GOOD INSIGHT, AGAIN...

Yes it is amazing what a person can do with a little imagination and a little risk taking.  The box is not always easy to step out of but for those who do the rewards can be stunning.

I chuckle about the company that locks people out till the end.  Think the template for their work might be the thing they are hiding and the simple light absorbing paint?

ANYWAY if it works and clients are happy that is the important part.  I sure wish I couldlock out some of my clients- LOL

Take care and please heed her advice you can do a lot with a little don't be afraid to take a chance with your imagination you just might be so glad you did!

Happy Refurbing!
