Inexpensive tools to make your life easier

mdhaworth by mdhaworth Journeyman(August 2007) (rank 3rd)

We have a lot of tools in our garage and there are several that didn’t cost much but get used again and again because they’re just so handy to have around. I thought I’d share some of the tools that you may not be familiar with but will make your life easier.  Add your favorites in the comments!

  • Wiring Stapler—This shoots a special kind of staple with a stop so the staples don’t crush your wires into the studs. Much quicker than nailing in those u shaped nails
  • Wire cutters/strippers—self explanatory but it’s nice to have the stripping tool right there with you
  • Electrical Detector—quick way to tell if the outlet or fixture is hot
  • Blue Tape—I’m guessing most folks are familiar with the blue, easy release masking tape made just for painting. It costs more than regular tape but is oh so worth it even for a cheap skate like me
  • 10 in 1 screwdriver—the square drive bit is one if the best if you buy the square drive screws to go with. Square drive screws work great and almost never strip like a Phillips can.
  • Pocket Hole Jig—this tool is a bit more specialized for woodworking but if you do an cabinetry it’s a must have. The jig helps you drill a precise angled hole to join two boards along their edges.
  • Speed Square—an ultra-handy square for all types of projects. It works great for marking cuts across boards.
  • Torpedo Level—for everything from picture hanging on up this little level is great to have around
  • Measuring Tape—you probably have a measuring tape but this one has a built in pencil sharpener and writing surface so you don’t have to hunt around for a paper to jot down the measurement
  • Wonder Bar—This is hands down my favorite tool for any demolition project. It takes nails out easily and is a great prybar.
  • PVC cutter—don’t use a hacksaw to cut your pvc for irrigation. This simple tool leaves a clean cut.

I completely agree!  and although this does not fit in your under $20 list you just have to have a shop vac.  They are not very expensive and so handy for dust and those unexpected floods from water leaks!  My favorite tool on your list has to be the speed square..........everyone should have at least two.
