Chalkboard Paint

Janeybug by Janeybug Journeyman(October 2007) (rank 1st)

Anything can be a blackboard and it’s not just for kids rooms.  You can find it in any hardware or paint store.   Chalkboard paint comes in lots of colors.  It can be painted on just about any surface.  You can paint an area on a wall and put a nice frame around it.

We bought this refrigerator from an appliance recycling store.  It is one that is to be built in and has removable door panels that you can change to match your cabinets.  These were pretty banged up and I was not sure what I wanted to do with them until I got the bright idea to replace two of the panels with ¼” wood and paint them with chalkboard paint.  I put sheet cork on the smaller panel so I have a place to take up coupons and notes.

Chalkboard paint comes in either a spray form or in a can to brush on.  I would suggest the spray for irregular shaped items but use the brush on type for walls or flat surfaces.  I put a coat of primer on the wood and then put three coats of chalkboard paint on.  It was super easy and inexpensive.

I use the new chalk boards doors to make grocery list notes and I always have the chalk ready for when kids come over as they love to decorate the doors.

Re: Chalkboard Paint

Excellent and creative!

One other cool product that may spice up a kids space or a special space is magnetic paint.  This can be painted under a paint or on top of a paint.  In other words you can highlight an area or you can conceal it.

The only advice I might add to the chalk board paint when using the spray form is don't do too much at one time.  three or four or 5 light coats is better than one heavy as the finished product will fool even the keenest eye.  You can usually find thin 1/4" mdf boards at your local hardwarte or big box store to paint and frame or make your own home made kids easel.

Great idea and you have my vote!

Re: Chalkboard Paint
That looks great! I've made little chalkboards from pieces of wood using that paint but this is really unique!
